Frequently Asked Questions
Below, you’ll find some common questions that we receive and our responses. If you don’t find the answer for your question, please give us a call and we’ll do our best to assist.
Q. Why should I go to a small store when big box/chain stores have everything?
A: DIY Steel has more variety of both craft and steel products to meet your every need. Not only is it all conveniently organized in one location, but since we specialize in metal-crafting you do not have to search across a broad inventory to find what you are looking for. In fact, there are typically only a few steel product options available in most big box stores. And, because our team are experts in the field, on the rare occasion that we don’t have what you need, we have access to commercial inventory to get it for you quickly.
Q. Aren’t big box stores/chains cheaper?
A: No. Our product pricing is competitive and in most cases less expensive than our competitors, due to the commercial buying power of our parent company, Standard Steel.
Q. Will your shop be as helpful as the bigger stores?
A: Without a doubt. DIY Steel is highly specialized in steel projects. Our invaluable experience as both steel professionals and creators can save time and increase overall satisfaction from start to finish. With so many products and competing interests, larger stores can’t provide that kind of guidance.
Q. How does your shop compare to other small steel distributors in Portland?
A: Other area distributors are primarily focused on serving a professional steelworker clientele rather than serving DIY’ers, crafters and artists. At DIY Steel, you’ll receive individualized, expert attention in our friendly, well-stocked shop. Also, the store is safe and organized, saving you from facing the hazards of digging through scrap yard bins. We also offer pre-cut steel and more equipment — including fuel burning machines that cut steel — to address your specialized needs.
Q. How does your pricing compare to metal supermarket pricing?
A: According to our research, prices at metal supermarkets are about 30 to 40 percent higher than what you will pay at DIY Steel.
Q. Can’t I just order this online?
A: Through other resources you may be able to order some ornamental pieces online. But many structural items cannot be shipped. Plus, you may have to visit multiple sites to gather everything for one project, not to mention hassling with varying shipping rates and return policies.
At DIY Steel, you’ll talk with a real person who is an expert in the field. They can answer your specific questions, listen to your ideas and help you get what’s needed to complete your project. You’ll likely save time, money and headaches.
Q. I’m concerned that your location is out of the way.
A: DIY Steel is about two minutes from the Lombard interchange on I-5 and about 10 minutes away from the Marine Drive interchange on I-205. Once here, we are easy to access and have ample parking.
Q. Are you open to the public?
A: Yes, we are open 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
